Transferring music into film

The beginnings of the music video go back to the year 1890. In American theaters there were already illustrated songs, the so-called „sound slides“, which enjoyed great popularity. Hand-colored pictures were printed on glass plates and projected onto a screen while singers performed live on stage.

The first music films with an artistic design level are closely linked to the emergence of the experimental music, media and art movements of the 1960s. In 1965 the singer Nico made a musical short film in black and white for her single I’m not sayin ‘, which shows her singing on the streets of London.

Queen’s 1975 video for Bohemian Rhapsody is often referred to as the first music video. Characteristic techniques such as different cutting frequencies for certain shape sections of the piece as well as fading in and out techniques were used.

In the late 1970s and 1980s there was a pronounced creative heyday for music videos. More and more bands and artists brought out music videos parallel to their publications, some with sophisticated concepts. New styles of music such as punk, new wave and electro pop emerged.

In the 2000s, it was mainly experimental videos in the drum’n’bass genre that enriched video art.

In Germany, the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe deals with art videos (https://zkm.de/en).
